Abstract
Homer W. Smith (1895-1962) was a central figure in the establishment of modern renal physiology. His contributions included experimental advances, such as the development of clearance techniques and hemodynamic studies, as well as conceptual insights that redefined the kidney as the primary organ of homeostasis. Beyond science, he cultivated a significant humanistic and philosophical production, exploring the evolution of religion and rationalist thought.
