Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the improvement of uremic gastrointestinal symptoms through symbiotic supplementation with Bifidobacterium longum, Lactobacillus rhamnosus, and agave inulin in patients undergoing hemodialysis. Materials and methods: A prospective longitudinal study was conducted with 44 hemodialysis patients aged 30 to 70 years, of both sexes, who received supplementation with 2 capsules of symbiotics while fasting for 120 days. Baseline and final assessments of body composition, biochemical and dietary parameters, as well as a gastrointestinal symptom questionnaire, were performed. To measure adherence, patients were provided with a consumption record sheet, and visits were conducted in the hemodialysis unit to reinforce compliance. Statistical analysis was performed using the Stata software package. All patients signed informed consent in accordance with the Declaration of Helsinki. Results: Significant results were obtained with p < 0.05 for albumin, sodium, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, hyporexia, dry weight, body mass index, and phase angle. Conclusions: It is proposed that supplementation with probiotic strains in patients with chronic kidney disease improves uremic gastrointestinal symptoms, thereby enhancing quality of life.
